How to Decorate Your Home with Ocean Photographic Art

There is something about the ocean that instantly changes the feeling of a room.

Maybe it's the calming blues, the sense of open space, or the memories it brings back of holidays, adventures, and time spent near the water. 

Whatever it is, ocean photographic prints have a unique way of making a home feel lighter, brighter, and more connected to nature.

As someone who spends much of her life photographing the ocean from both above and below the surface, I love seeing how different pieces find their way into my collectors homes.

A print that reminds one person of a favourite beach can create a completely different feeling for someone else.

If you've been wondering where to hang ocean artwork in your home, here are a few of my favourite spaces and some ideas for choosing the right piece for each one.

The living room is where people often spend the most time, making it one of the best places to showcase a larger ocean photographic print.

Large-scale coastal wall art can instantly become a focal point, drawing the eye and creating a sense of peace throughout the space. 

Aerial ocean photography works particularly well here because it adds colour, movement, and natural patterns without overwhelming the room.

One of my favourite options for a living area is a piece like Love of Light - which captures the soft colours and textures of Hill Inlet from above, at sunset. The champagne and teal hues blend together making this as a particularly striking piece. 

If you have a larger wall to fill, consider pairing complementary pieces together as a gallery arrangement. Collections that combine aerial and underwater imagery often create beautiful visual balance while telling a bigger story.

Bedrooms are all about creating a space to unwind. Soft, serene ocean imagery tends to work beautifully here.

Look for pieces featuring gentle water movement; whales gliding effortlessly beneath the surface, turtles drifting through clear blue water, or peaceful reef scenes that evoke a sense of stillness.

Whale photography is particularly powerful in a bedroom setting. There is something inherently calming about these gentle giants. Their graceful movements and quiet presence can create a sense of peace and perspective, helping transform a bedroom into a true retreat from the busyness of everyday life.

Prints such as Later and Nipper bring a relaxed ocean feel without dominating the room. The natural blues and movement help create a soothing atmosphere that's perfect for a bedroom retreat.

I recommend choosing artwork that makes you 'feel' something when you look at it. 

Whether it's a memory of a snorkelling trip, a love of marine life, or simply a connection to the ocean, that emotional response is what makes a house feel like home.

Your entryway is the first impression guests have of your home, so it's the perfect place to showcase artwork with personality.

A striking photographic print can instantly set the tone and create a welcoming atmosphere. 

Hallways and entryways are often overlooked when decorating, but they can be some of the most rewarding spaces to fill with art because they create moments of discovery as you move through the home.

This is where I love displaying pieces that feature the ocean's more playful side. Curious turtles, colourful reef scenes, and unexpected underwater encounters often become instant conversation starters. 

Guests naturally pause, smile, and ask questions, making these spaces feel more personal and memorable.

One of the things I love most about ocean photography is its ability to transport us. Even a brief glance at a cheeky turtle or sandy beach can bring back memories of holidays and simple times spent by or in the water.

More people than ever are working from home, and the artwork we surround ourselves with can have a surprising impact on our mood and creativity.

Ocean wall art can introduce a sense of openness and escape, especially during busy workdays. A vibrant reef scene, whale encounter, or sweeping aerial landscape can provide a moment of calm whenever you glance away from your screen.

One of my personal favourites for a workspace is Never Far, which captures the beautiful connection between a humpback whale and her calf. It's a reminder of the incredible natural world that exists beyond our daily to-do lists.

The best artwork is rarely chosen purely to match a colour palette. More often, it's the one that makes you stop, smile, and feel something.

Whether you're drawn to the colours of the Great Barrier Reef, a close encounter with a whale or turtle, or the beautiful patterns of Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet, there really is no right or wrong choice.
